One of my resolutions this year has been to help our family save money. One of the first things we looked at was our utility bills. With simple adjustments, you will see savings each month.
To start, here are the biggest wastes of money we have experienced.
Fixing a Leaky Faucet – One of our bathtubs had a dripping leak that progressively got worse. In past times I could just pop off the hot and cold cover and tighten the screws. This time, however, the leak went all the way back to the rubber grommet in the back which involved turning off water and replacing parts. We were still recovering from the flu so I called in reinforcements; the plumber. I am the biggest penny pincher, but that was money well spent. If you prefer to fix it yourself, I found a step by step guide as well as a video with instructions on how to fix a leaky faucet on Today’s Homeowner.

Clean the Dryer Vent – We have a pretty amazing washer and dryer, but I always felt the dryer could do better. Over the past month, it stopped drying and I had to keep rewashing clothes to get the moldy smell out. A code on our dryer was flashing “D90” which meant our dryer vent was 90% blocked from airflow. We bought a dryer vent cleaning brush, but before we could even put that to good use we had to find out were our dryer vent was going. Turns out the folks that replaced our heater vents moved the tail-end of our dryer vent to the foundation venting, I don’t know why it clearly is not a good spot. See in the video:
At this point, I was just feeling very lucky we didn’t have a house fire and we were able to clean the dryer vent out. We used this Dryer Vent Cleaning Kit and a Leaf blower now our dryer works like a charm.

Insulate Water Heater – Our hot water has always been near the boiling side, which we thought was a bit overkill. There is always a concern that the kids would burn themselves while washing their hands or taking showers. So we turned down the gage.
To stop the dangers of scalding ourselves, we turned it between medium and hot, which still works just as well.
Even with turning the dial down, the gas to our water heater is always turning on in an effort to maintain the temperature of our hot water. So next we will be covering the water heater with an insulation blanket. This will maintain the temperature of the water.

Register Covers and Deflectors – In our house, we have what they call floor registers, which is where the heat comes out. There are some areas of our house that do not need to be heated or would well if they were pointed in a different direction.

Here are some more ways to save money on your utility bills:
- Outlet & Plumbing Insulation
- Weather stripping on windows and doors
- Draft stoppers on the bottom of windows and doors
- Digital Thermostat with temperature settings lowered during the day or while on vacation
- Energy Smart light bulbs
- Use a dishwasher and loading it fully
- Wash clothes in cold water
Even with our size family, these money saving tips are pretty simple and easy to implement.
