My biggest tip for saving money on groceries is creating a menu. It sounds so simple but imagine walking through the store without first having a plan. We would most likely have a full shopping cart, but not enough ingredients to make dinners for the week or two.
Create Your Menu
We are a large family that shops every two weeks, it is so important that we organize our shopping. Start with making a menu for two weeks which includes dinners, lunches, breakfasts etc.
Here is part of our dinner menu:
I usually plan 11 meals, 2 leftover nights and one fast food night out. If they are any leftovers, they will be served to my husband for lunch or for dinner on a leftover night.
Make a Shopping List
Now I create the shopping list. Next to the dinner I write the ingredients needed:
Spaghetti: Hamburger, Noodles, Sauce, Potatoes, Broccoli, Garlic Bread
Albondigas: Hamburger, rice, bell pepper, cilantro, tomato sauce, tortillas
Tamale pie: Hamburger, Corn meal, taco seasoning, corn, tomato sauce.
So you get the idea. Now check your pantry for the ingredients. Do you have what you need already or do you need to buy the ingredients?
Organize your Shopping List
I like to organize my shopping list according to the layout of the store. This ensures menu ingredients aren’t missed and saves time. It’s not fun to be clear across the store when you realize what you needed is back where you began.
Do you have coupons?
If you have coupons or have notes about a sale, highlight it. You have already done everything you need to save money on this trip to the store, don’t forget those money savings coupons.
