When the word ‘fat’ is mentioned, we are programmed to take this word negatively regardless of what it is about. Fat is a sign of being a couch potato or even being unhealthy irresponsible individual, which is not always the case. Being thing, lean or skinny symbolizes a healthy, active individual who is considered as more capable of completing tasks and even more appealing to the human eye.
We forget the simplest and most obvious detail and blur the lines of our very own judgment. In this digitalized world, an individual is bombarded by advertisements every minute of every day, from new efficient diet plans, detoxification and even different promotional challenges that promise you weight loss in a given span of time. Without us even realizing it, we have been programmed and brainwashed by the social media. One need to differentiate that social marketing is legalized lying, and that is a fact. Hate to break the bubble but losing belly fat in one week is physically impossible for any human being, it would normally take a week to melt the fat through exercising.
The distributors and companies that sell supplements and healthcare products are benefiting by selling more and more of their products, thanks to such advertisements and brainwashing through print media such as fashion magazines, digital media such as movies, blogs such as ‘how to lose fat in seven days.’ There would have been a possibility if one was a wizard, however the bitter truth is, it doesn’t exist.
The most heartbreaking truth is there is no age limitation when it comes to stereotyping individuals based on their body structure. Not just teens and adults but even children are becoming conscious of their bodies, they want to look sexy and fit in those trendy summer style rompers to carry an amazing style statement, they play with Barbie dolls that are given the perfect ‘skinny’ bodies and want to look like that, the boundaries no longer exist in terms of sex or age.
Everyone in the world wants look appealing, which according to the media is being skinny. Many women vomit willingly so they do not put on weight which can cause liver damage and even ulcers. Being skinny should not be the primary concern but being healthy is what should really matter, one should be proud and comfortable in any shape and size of the body. Many people are genetically prone to gaining more weight no matter what they eat, should that mean, human beings should look at them differently!
The amount of pressure on adults, teens and children can sometimes even cause eating disorders leading to obesity and anorexia. According to health consultant, Michelle Spencer, 12 million people are suffering from eating disorders in the UK and USA and another 80% adults not satisfied with the way they look.
We might be growing and evolving, but are standards are showing otherwise, we are not going forward when it comes to the way we think and perceive others around us. Human beings come in all different colors, shapes and sizes and that is what makes them unique not an outcast, the norms of our society are not changing for the better but for the worst. Obesity competitions are held in the US, with individuals who weigh the most take the prize home and fashion shows that only take women and men that look like skeletons. Is that what we have become now? We have indeed become an appearance driven society, personal satisfaction is not promoted and is becoming a thing of the past.
Many of us might still debate as to whether this is the right way to promote individuals to be as skinny or if it is really a trap. Our judgment might even save lives since many individuals commit suicide, which indicates this is not something that should be taken lightly. Fat shaming has to be stopped, being healthy is what should be promoted, sadly this would not be in the favor of the companies that sell products and benefit from this propaganda but it would help us become better human being and be comfortable in our own skin.
