When I was in high school I really loved my business machines class; trying to beat my previous typing and 10-key time was my goal for the day. I know I nerdie that way.
My first job out of high school using my skills, consisted of typing 7 digits repeatedly hundreds of times per day. I loved it, I would go as fast as I could, but one day I started noticing severe pain in my wrist at night it would wake me up. I dealt with the pain for as long as I could but finally went to the doctor turned out it was carpel tunnel. I had surgery to repair my wrist.
Well now I am a Mom with six wonderful children, while I don’t use the 10 key like I did back in the day, I do put pressure on my hands and wrists a lot. Picking up babies, cleaning, nursing in awkward positions, and just constant use has been hard on my hands and wrists.
As a Mom we can’t help picking up our babies often and all the work, but it starts even before we have our little one in arms, wrist injuries can happen when your pregnant, one such injury is called Mommy Thumb. I picture a baby ready to suck his thumb.
Anyway…if you find yourself with an injury to your hand or wrist or it just plain hurts, my first advice would be to go see a doctor for treatment. But if your stubborn like me, you could try do a few things that are suggest here:
- To help me sleep at night my doctor prescribed a wrist brace, it didn’t get rid of all the pain but it did help.
- Rest it if at all possible, maybe carry the babies with the other arm or lift with the other hand
- Another thing that helped was ibuprofen it is an anti-inflammatory so that makes sense.
*Please remember that this is just what worked for me and cannot replace the advice of your doctor.
Have you ever had a wrist injury, how did you treat it?

Thank your for sharing this. I use 10 key all the time in my profession (accounting) and do feel some twinges of pain. I need to take care of myself before I too need surgery. I sleep with a brace (when I remember to) as a precautionary measure. How did surgery go? Did it help with the pain?
P.S. Way to go mom! SIX kiddos! I have one and am wiped out most of the time. YOU my friend are my hero!
Hello Cynthia and Thanks for stopping by. Guess I should have talked about the surgery. My surgeon was great, surgery went smoothly and healed quickly. I have no more “carpel tunnel” pain thank goodness.
PS. Thank you
I am wiped out most of the time to and when Im not I pass out as soon as I sit LOL, but they are so worth it.
Hi! First off, I salute you! Taking care of a home and 6 kids is a great task. I only have one daughter but she has special needs. She’s 6 now. I work from home so I can take care of her. I’m starting to feel pain in my wrist already. Multitasking must be taking its toll on me. It’s difficult when your hands and wrists are affected. We use it all the time, working, cleaning, giving her a bath, teaching her to write, carrying her when she throws a tantrum. And she’s heavy already. How did you know it’s carpal tunnel? Is it the same with gout or arthritis? I’m not sure what I have now. I guess I shall consult a hand specialist as soon as possible. Thanks for sharing your story. Now I know I’m not the only one experiencing this.
Hi Luanne, thank you for stopping by and thank you for the compliment. Even with one kiddo we are busy. I didn’t know it was carpel tunnel, I had to several different specialists. I wish I would have seen a “hand” specialist sooner, it was so painful and didn’t have to be. It was explained to me as a build up of scar tissue.
thank you again for stopping by, please let me know how it goes for you.
