You’ve just taken down your Christmas decorations and you’re feeling a little blue. But don’t worry; January is full of holidays that you could celebrate!
National Step in a Puddle and Splash Your Friend Day – January 11
If you’re in a part of the US that isn’t frozen over, then you can celebrate by being a little bit mischievous. Remember what it was like to be a kid in winter and to jump in puddles? Now you don’t have to – have fun, grab your kids and step in a few puddles!
National Popcorn Day – January 19
National Popcorn Day’s exact date is a matter of debate. Some say it falls on the 19th others say that it’s whenever the Superbowl is on. Whichever you decide, National Popcorn Day simply has to be celebrated. There are lots of things you could do on popcorn day, including stringing popcorn and hanging it outside for birds to eat, and playing popcorn air hockey (all you need is a flat table and two straws). You could of course, simply make some awesome popcorn recipes, like the ones here.
Martin Luther King Day – January 20
Martin Luther King Day is a national holiday in America, marking his birthday. It takes place on the third Monday every year, which this year is the 20th life and achievements of Martin Luther King, but many see it as a day to promote equal rights for all. This day might be a day to spend with family and friends, learning about the civil rights movement and helping those who are still oppressed.
Australia Day – January 26
The official national day of Australia, this day commemorates the establishment of the first European settlement in 1788. However, it’s not just a day for Australians to celebrate, as it’s celebrated the world over. Of course, in January it’s summer, but in the US, it might be a little chillier. Pretend you’re in Oz and fire up the Barbie, have a pavlova and watch some Australian movie stars like Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman in Australia (the movie).
